Many graduates seek a career in PR, but the truth is, it takes more than just a good degree to be successful in this dynamic and fast paced industry. You’ll need to be a great communicator, superb writer and a chameleon if you are to create exciting campaigns with demonstrable results for your clients.
An internship in a busy PR agency is by far and away the best indicator as to whether you’ll sink or swim – here we’ve pulled together our top tips for getting as much out of it as possible.
1. Organisation is key
With a busy diary full of strict deadlines and the agendas of multiple clients, journalists and managers, a great PR lives and dies by their ‘to do’ list. So, whether it’s on your computer, in your notepad, or on Post Its all over your desk – find what works for you and list, list, list.
2. Speak up
A good intern is diligent, enthusiastic and friendly, but a great intern is willing to speak up and be heard, whatever the situation may hold. Assertive interns are memorable interns – so get stuck in, make friends and you’ll have a much higher chance of securing an amazing reference.
3. Stay positive
PR is an exciting and varied career, but the truth is, the beginning of the ladder is not as glamourous as The Hills made it out to be. You may not enjoy every single task given to you, but you’ll always be learning – and you can rest assured that everyone you meet at the agency has been there themselves. Keep a smile on your face and stay willing!
4. Say yes!
Say yes to all opportunities that come your way – even if they don’t sound like your cup of tea at first. Should you choose to pursue a career in PR, you’ll work on a multitude of clients across a vast array of sectors, and along the way you’ll learn that the industries you may never have thought of could turn out to be the most interesting. You never know where it may take you!
